Lt Col Onyechi Anele on Tuesday officially assumed duty as the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, becoming the first female officer in Nigerian Army history to occupy the prestigious position.

The handover ceremony took place at the Army Headquarters in Abuja and also marked the formal exit of Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, who led the Directorate for nearly four years.

In an emotional farewell speech, Nwachukwu described his time in office as “eventful and fulfilling,” reflecting on a journey marked by strategic innovations and modernization of the Army’s media outreach.

“When I assumed this noble responsibility on 16 June 2021, I was fully aware of the enormous expectations that came with it. Today, I dare to say with confidence that I did not merely react to these challenges — I boldly confronted them with innovation, vision, and purpose,” he said.

Among his notable achievements were the launch of Nigerian Army Info TV, the establishment of a Strategic Communications Centre, and acquisition of state-of-the-art multimedia equipment, which collectively improved public engagement and transparency.

Lt Col Anele, in her maiden address, expressed gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Olufemi Oluyede, for entrusting her with the strategic role. “To be appointed the spokesperson of the Nigerian Army is not only historic but deeply humbling,” she said. “I do not take this responsibility lightly.”

She also acknowledged the legacy of her predecessor, praising Nwachukwu’s leadership as “transformative and inspiring.” “Major General Nwachukwu’s passion and professionalism laid a formidable foundation. I will always value your counsel and support,” she said.

Lt Col Anele emphasized her commitment to transparency, professionalism, respect, and proactiveness, and underscored the importance of building trust with the media and the public.

She assured journalists of continued collaboration, calling for fairness and responsibility in the coverage of military operations.

“I urge you to continue supporting the Nigerian Army as we work to protect our nation’s peace, unity, and sovereignty,” she said. “We will continue to tell the Nigerian Army’s story — not just through words, but through actions that reflect honour, sacrifice, responsibility, and service to the nation.”

Her appointment has been widely hailed as a significant milestone in the Nigerian Army’s journey toward inclusion and progressive leadership.
