Despite a modest 1.9% year-on-year increase in manufacturing production for November, experts warn that the sector’s health remains fragile. Seasonally adjusted data reveals a concerning 0.5% decline in the past three months, painting a picture of stagnation, not genuine growth.

“The latest figures offer a glimmer of hope, but the overall trend is still worrisome,” remarks Azar Jammine, Chief Economist at Econometrix. He links the sluggish progress to the ongoing struggles of the South African petroleum industry, which further dampened manufacturing a year ago. “While the sector isn’t collapsing, it lacks the momentum needed for a robust recovery.”

Looking beyond manufacturing, South Africa grapples with a diverse set of challenges:

Education: The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) board chair’s leave of absence amid corruption allegations raises concerns about transparency and accountability in student funding.

International Relations: South Africa prepares to present its legal case against alleged Israeli atrocities in Gaza to the International Court of Justice, seeking justice and upholding international law.

Infrastructure: Recent heavy rains, while bringing relief to parched reservoirs, have also exposed vulnerabilities in the country’s infrastructure, demanding urgent attention.
