Following their elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations group stage, Ghana fired head coach Chris Hughton.

The Black Stars lost their opening game 2-1 against Cape Verde and ended up with two points from Group B after tying 2-2 with both Egypt and Mozambique.

Ghana was eliminated on Tuesday after the results did not go in their favor, despite having remote prospects of moving on as one of the four teams in third place.

In February of last year, Hughton was named head coach of Ghana.

“Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect,” a Ghana Football Association (GFA) statement said., external

“The executive council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.

“The GFA will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”

Chris Hughton, the former manager of Newcastle United and Brighton, assumed the role of technical adviser for the four-time continental champions in February 2022. He took over from Otto Addo, who resigned after Ghana’s disappointing performance in the 2022 World Cup, finishing at the bottom of Group H with just one win.

Ghana faced early exits in both the 2021 Afcon finals in Cameroon and a tournament in Ivory Coast. Despite setbacks, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) expressed unwavering support for Hughton after a fan confrontation following a surprising loss to Cape Verde.

In a twist of fate, Ghana, under Hughton’s guidance, seemed poised for the last 16, holding a 2-0 lead over Mozambique in their final group game. However, a dramatic turnaround by the Mambas, scoring twice in second-half stoppage time, secured an unexpected draw, leading to Ghana’s elimination.

The 65-year-old manager also faced challenges in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, experiencing a mixed start with a last-minute victory over Madagascar and a subsequent 1-0 loss to Comoros.
