Tragedy struck in central Mali on Monday when a bus en route from Mopti to Bamako collided with a 10-tonne truck, resulting in a devastating toll of at least 15 lives lost and 46 individuals sustaining injuries, according to the transport ministry.

The collision occurred between the towns of Kessedougou and Ouan, prompting civil defence workers to swiftly transport the victims to Somino Dolo hospital in Mopti, as detailed in the official statement from the ministry.

“The provisional toll is 15 dead and 46 injured, some of them seriously,” it added.

This unfortunate incident sheds light on the persisting issue of road safety in Mali, where road accidents are unfortunately common.

Contributing factors include subpar road conditions, inadequate vehicle maintenance, and instances of human error. Addressing these systemic challenges is crucial to preventing such tragedies in the future and ensuring the safety of travelers on Mali’s roads.
