In a historic diplomatic move, President Isaac Herzog warmly received President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau at his office, marking the first-ever visit by an African leader amidst Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas.

This encounter not only signifies a deepening of bilateral relations but also positions Guinea-Bissau as a potential mediator, showcasing a commitment to regional stability.

In this historic meeting, Herzog commended Embaló for unwavering support during challenging times, stating, “You’re a true friend of Israel, and your studies here in Israel strengthen our enduring bond.”

Embaló’s backing of Israel’s position within the African Union amid the Hamas conflict marks a significant endorsement from the African continent.

Embaló, in turn, declared himself a “messenger of peace,” drawing on Guinea-Bissau’s own history of conflict to bring a unique perspective. Acknowledging the heavy toll of war, he emphasised, “We understand the price and burden of war; it should always be the last resort.” His commitment to facilitating negotiations underscores Guinea-Bissau’s dedication to contributing to regional peace initiatives.

This visit not only cements the friendship between Israel and Guinea-Bissau but also initiates fresh avenues for dialogue and understanding in a region grappling with enduring conflicts. Embaló’s willingness to contribute to negotiations holds the promise of inspiring other African nations to actively engage in Middle Eastern diplomacy, drawing upon their firsthand experience of conflict’s devastations.

The significance of this meeting transcends mere goodwill, hinting at a potential transformation in global dynamics. Smaller nations, like Guinea-Bissau, may increasingly wield positive influence in international relations, particularly in advancing global peace efforts. As Israel and its neighbors ponder their next moves, the role of countries such as Guinea-Bissau in facilitating dialogue becomes pivotal. This visit not only fortifies bilateral ties but also provides a ray of hope for a more peaceful future in the Middle East
