Jose Pesseiro has since left his role in February after his contract expired with the Super Eagles and while the Nigeria Football Federation has yet to announce a substantive replacement for the Portuguese, Finidi has been put in charge for the two friendly matches against the West African countries.

The 52-year-old former Ajax Amsterdam and Real Betis winger, made a scoring debut for Nigeria in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Burkina Faso at the National Stadium, Lagos on the 27th of July 1991.   On his debut in 1991, George, who also featured for Calabar Rovers and Sharks FC in the Nigerian league before traveling to Europe scored one and made four assists for the Late Rashidi Yekini, and also assisted the latter to score Nigeria’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal against Bulgaria in Dallas on the 19th of June 1994.  Finidi George also scored the goal that took Nigeria to her first FIFA World Cup finals when he put Nigeria ahead against Algeria in a crucial qualifier that ended 1-1 on the 8th October of 1993.

He was appointed the Coach of Enyimba in September 2021 winning a historic Ninth Professional Football League title for the Aba Club.
