In a significant military operation conducted in the northern region of Menaka, Malian forces successfully neutralised Abu Huzeifa, a high-ranking commander associated with an Islamic State affiliate in West Africa.
The announcement of Huzeifa’s demise was made via state television on Monday, revealing that the operation, focused on the Indelimane sector, concluded with his confirmed death on Sunday.
Details surrounding the operation remain undisclosed at this time, as per Malian authorities.
However, Huzeifa’s elimination comes as a significant achievement, especially given his alleged involvement in a notorious 2017 attack in neighbouring Niger, which claimed the lives of both American and Nigerien soldiers.

The U.S. State Department’s Rewards for Justice program had previously offered a substantial bounty of up to $5 million for any information leading to Huzeifa’s capture due to his role in this attack.
The successful operation against Huzeifa underscores ongoing efforts to combat the persistent threat posed by extremist groups affiliated with al Qaeda and Islamic State across Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.
The region has endured a decade of violence resulting in the loss of thousands of lives, contributing to the destabilisation of West Africa’s central Sahel region.
The crisis has had far-reaching impacts, with the International Organisation for Migration reporting that as of March, over 3 million individuals have been displaced as a result of the protracted security and humanitarian challenges in the area.
