The Lagos State Taskforce, working with the Ministry of Agriculture, has begun a crackdown on the illegal sale of livestock in unauthorised locations.

Led by CSP Shola Jejeloye, the operation started at Agege Ram Market, evacuating dozens of livestock for health checks at the Lagos State Abattoir.

Jejeloye condemned the unhygienic and hazardous practices of roadside animal traders, posing risks to sellers, buyers, and commuters alike.

“From this location it is clear that these animals have not been properly barricaded from the road therefore it is very easy for one ram to lose control and jump on to the road which could lead to an accident” Jejeloye stated.

Dr. Kofoworola Oloritun, Head of Monitoring, Enforcement, and Compliance at the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, emphasised that roadside livestock sellers are violating state environmental and agricultural laws. She stressed the importance of inspecting animals for disease before sale to ensure public health and compliance.

“We have issued warnings to these operators severally but they fell on deaf ears. The animals evacuated from the illegal market will be properly analysed here at the abattoir before having a stakeholders meeting with their owners and enlighten on the need to adhere to the laid down laws regarding sale of livestock”

Dr. Oloritun also mentioned that fines will be imposed on illegal market operators before returning their livestock to them.

CSP Jejeloye urged operators across Lagos to comply with regulations, ensuring livestock are tested and sold at approved sites to protect public safety. He warned of livestock seizure and forfeiture for those risking lives through reckless practices.

He advised residents to buy from certified dealers to avoid health risks from substandard products.
