The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will hire an expatriate technical adviser for the Super Eagles following the team’s disappointing performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria has failed to secure a win in four qualifying matches, the latest being a surprising loss to the lowly-ranked Benin Republic. This development has triggered a backlash from fans demanding the dismissal of coach Finidi George. In response, the NFF issued a statement on Thursday after a meeting, announcing the forthcoming appointment of a technical adviser and apologizing to Super Eagles fans for the team’s recent performances.

“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation held a meeting on Wednesday, 12th June 2024, in hybrid mode to deliberate on important issues in Nigerian football and resolved as follows:
“The Executive Committee wholeheartedly apologizes to Nigerians for the dismal output and subsequent poor returns of the Senior Men National Team, Super Eagles, in four out of 10 matches in the ongoing qualification series for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals. The committee pledges to work diligently and put necessary measures in place to ensure a better-prepared squad ahead of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers in September and the resumption of the World Cup qualifiers in March 2025,” the NFF stated.

“Further to this, the Executive Committee has resolved to employ an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles in the coming weeks, ahead of the AFCON qualifiers and the remaining FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.”
The future role of Finidi George with the Super Eagles remains uncertain.

Additionally, the NFF expressed displeasure with the poor attitude of some players towards national assignments and unanimously decided to implement a more robust scouting program to identify outstanding Nigeria-eligible players worldwide who can add significant value to the team.

Beyond the Super Eagles, the NFF promised to support the Super Falcons in their preparations for the Olympics in France, taking place from 24th July to 11th August.
