The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed sanctions on the President of the Cameroon Football Association Samuel Eto’o, for violating ethics.

In a statement released on Thursday, CAF announced that Eto’o faces “charges of alleged manipulation of football matches and violating the principles of ethics and integrity.” The former Barcelona striker has been fined $200,000.

The statement, titled “CAF Disciplinary Board Outcome on FECAFOOT President, Samuel Eto’o Fils,” read in part: “The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) Disciplinary Board addressed the matter concerning Fédération Camerounaise de Football (FECAFOOT) President Mr. Samuel Eto’o Fils.”

The Disciplinary Board found insufficient evidence to find Mr. Samuel Eto’o Fils and Mr. Valentin Nkwain guilty of match manipulation. However, they determined that Eto’o seriously violated principles of ethics, integrity, and sportsmanship as stipulated in Article 2, paragraph 3 of the CAF Statutes by signing a Brand Ambassador contract with the company 1XBET for remuneration. Consequently, Mr. Eto’o was fined $200,000.
Since he was elected President of Cameroon FA in 2021, Eto’o has been involved in several controversies. He was filmed attacking a cameraman outside a stadium during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022. The following year, he faced a CAF investigation for alleged misconduct after complaints from several Cameroonian football stakeholders.
