The Super Eagles of Nigeria, along with several other top African teams, have dropped in the latest FIFA World Rankings released on Thursday.
The Super Eagles have fallen one place to 39th after failing to win any matches in last month’s 2026 World Cup Qualifiers against South Africa and Benin. Despite this, they remain fifth in Africa.

Morocco, the continent’s top-ranked team, has dropped two places globally to 14th, while second-ranked Senegal has fallen one place to 19th. Reigning African champions Ivory Coast have also dropped one place to 38th, as have Algeria (from 44th to 46th), Cameroon (from 49th to 51st), and Mali (from 50th to 53rd).

South Africa was the only side within the African top 10 to improve, moving up from 59th to 57th globally. Seven-time African champions Egypt and Tunisia remained unchanged, staying at 36th and 41st globally, respectively.

The next FIFA ranking will be released on September 19th, after all African teams have participated in the first round of group fixtures for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
