Leader of the Concerned Nigerlites Forum, Malam Tauheed Haruna, announced the group’s withdrawal from the planned nationwide protests at a press conference in Minna on Friday.

He, however, called on President Bola Tinubu to, as a matter of urgency, come out clear with an achievable plan for his administration that would reduce hardship and address Nigerians.

Haruna said the president speaking to Nigerians at critical moments would go a long way in diffusing the situation.

He said the decision to withdraw was reached during an emergency meeting of the state executive committee, held with zonal leaders and 25 local government coordinators

He also added that the success of engagements with stakeholders at a recent town hall meeting organised by the Niger State government also influenced the youths’ decision to opt-out.

“The town hall meeting provided an opportunity for all stakeholders to interact with the government on pressing national issues.

“Issues such as the high cost of living and the measures being taken by the government to alleviate hardship,” he said.

He commended Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State for releasing 50,000 metric tons of grains for sale at a 50 per cent discount and an additional 20,000 metric tons of fertiliser.

The forum’s leaders also commended the governor for approving a N20,000 wage award for civil servants and permitting them to buy the grains on credit.

He observed that this shows the government’s commitment to citizens’ welfare, adding that youths will not engage in uncoordinated protests.

He urged governments at all levels to prioritise citizens’ welfare and wellbeing and make concerted efforts to tackle hardship and insecurity.
