The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has scheduled local government elections for November 30, 2024.

This announcement was made by KANSIEC Chairman Sani Malumfashi during a press conference in Kano on Wednesday.

Malumfashi outlined a detailed timeline for the electoral process. “The notification of the election will be issued on November 15. Nomination forms will be available from October 1 to October 11, with submissions due by October 18, 2024,” he stated.

Screening of candidates is set for October 18 to October 20, followed by the release of the list of eligible candidates on October 24. “The results of the winners will be announced by December 10, 2024,” Malumfashi added, referencing the relevant sections of the Electoral Act and Kano Local Government Law that authorise the Commission to conduct the elections.

These elections follow a recent Supreme Court judgement granting financial autonomy to local governments. Malumfashi assured that the elections will be conducted in strict compliance with the law.

Candidates have been advised to follow strict guidelines regarding campaign materials. “Candidates are barred from placing their posters on places of worship, schools, and government buildings. Anyone violating these rules will be punished,” Malumfashi warned.

He emphasised that all 19 political parties in the state are expected to participate in the elections. The Commission will work closely with security agencies to ensure a peaceful process. “Kano, with 44 local governments and over 7 million voters, presents significant security challenges, particularly in light of current economic difficulties,” Malumfashi noted.

To manage the elections, the Commission plans to recruit around 13,000 ad-hoc staff to oversee activities at the 11,000 polling units across the state.
