Nigeria: Edo State Government Warns of Impersonation by Philip Shaibu

The Edo State Government has issued a stern warning, accusing Philip Shaibu of impersonating the position of deputy governor. The government urged Shaibu to cease presenting himself as the state’s deputy governor.

This development follows a ruling by a Federal High Court in Abuja on July 17, which reinstated Shaibu as the deputy governor of Edo State. The court overturned Shaibu’s impeachment by the Edo House of Assembly, which had taken place three months prior. Judge James Omotosho declared the impeachment unlawful and ordered the Inspector General of Police to restore Shaibu’s security details and ensure that his suspended salaries and allowances are paid.

However, the Edo State House of Assembly has appealed the court’s ruling and requested a stay of execution pending the outcome of the appeal. Shaibu, on the other hand, has argued that the reinstatement judgment is declarative and should be implemented immediately, regardless of the appeal.

In response, Chris Nehikhare, the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, expressed concerns about Shaibu’s actions. “The Edo State Government has observed that former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has been engaging in correspondence with various institutions and organizations, both within and outside the state, in an act of impersonation,” Nehikhare stated.

He emphasized that Shaibu is not recognized as the deputy governor of Edo State and any communications from him in that capacity should be disregarded as fraudulent. The government highlighted that the matter of Shaibu’s alleged reinstatement remains under judicial review, with hearings for motions filed by the State Government and the Edo House of Assembly scheduled for September 24, 2024.

Nehikhare further clarified that the state and the assembly, represented by senior lawyers Oluwole Iyamu (SAN) and Ken Mozia (SAN), are seeking a stay of execution, suspension of the judgment, and a restraining order to prevent Shaibu from assuming any official duties as deputy governor until the appeal is resolved.

“As of now, Omobayo Marvelous Godwins is the legitimate deputy governor of Edo State. Any actions or communications by Philip Shaibu in this capacity are considered impersonation. Those engaging with him do so at their own risk,” Nehikhare warned, urging security agencies to monitor and address any security concerns related to Shaibu’s actions.
