Rukia Bulle, a 26-year-old journalist from Kenya’s Nation Media Group, has been awarded the 2024 BBC News Komla Dumor Award.
Specializing in human interest stories, Bulle is the ninth recipient of this prestigious accolade, created to honor Ghanaian journalist Komla Dumor, who passed away in 2014.
Bulle has gained prominence not only for her impactful reporting but also for her engaging presence on TikTok, where she shares insights into the journalism field. Her ability to highlight under-represented voices and handle challenging stories impressed the judges, who noted her strong on-air presence and resilience.
“Winning this award is incredibly validating,” said Bulle. “I hope it inspires young girls, especially those from minority communities, to dream big and achieve their goals.”
As part of her award, Bulle will spend three months with BBC News teams in London, receiving training and mentorship from leading BBC journalists. She will also report on a story in an African country for BBC’s global audience.
Tarik Kafala, acting director of BBC World Service, expressed enthusiasm about Bulle’s win, noting that previous award recipients have made significant contributions to journalism. The Komla Dumor Award continues to recognize and support talented journalists across Africa, following in the footsteps of past winners like Paa Kwesi Asare and Victoria Rubadiri.
