The Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen (JNIM) armed group has seized control of the Kayes barracks in Mali, intensifying the ongoing violence and instability in the region.

JNIM, a significant militant group in the Sahel, has been responsible for numerous attacks on both military and civilian targets in recent years.

In response to the escalating crisis, the High Islamic Council, led by Cherif Ousmane Madani Haidara and General Yamoussa Camara, has called for dialogue with all armed groups in Mali. This initiative seeks to address the growing dissatisfaction among military and civilian populations as extremist groups like JNIM expand their influence in southern Mali. The council’s effort aims to bring various stakeholders together to find a peaceful resolution, though significant challenges remain.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, JNIM’s involvement in the illicit logging economy has exacerbated deforestation and contributed to regional instability. While the success of the dialogue remains uncertain, the High Islamic Council’s initiative represents an important step toward addressing Mali’s deepening crisis.

Meanwhile, Mali faces another internal issue as Major General Oumar Diarra, Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces, has submitted his resignation to Transitional President Col. Assimi Goita. The reasons for his resignation are unclear, and it is not yet known whether it has been accepted. This development occurs amid rising tensions within the military junta, particularly between Goita and Camara, as well as between Diarra and Colonels Sadio Camara and Modibo Kone.
