On Wednesday, five Kenyan police officers were charged with aiding the escape of a suspected serial killer and 12 others from a Nairobi police station.
The accused officers, who were on duty during the jailbreak, are facing a two-week detention request by prosecutors to facilitate further investigation. This includes reviewing CCTV footage, collecting statements, and examining the officers’ phones.
Among the escapees is Collins Jumaisi, recently arrested for the murder of at least six women, with claims of killing 42 in total. Jumaisi’s lawyer alleges he was tortured into confessing, a claim denied by prosecutors.
Preliminary investigations suggest insider involvement in the escape. A manhunt has been launched to recapture the fugitives, who were found missing from their cell on Tuesday morning after reportedly cutting through a wire mesh.
