Twenty medical students who were kidnapped in Benue State have been successfully rescued, according to security sources.
The operation was orchestrated by the office of the National Security Adviser, involving a coordinated effort between various security agencies, including the police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and military personnel. The Benue State government also provided critical support during the mission.
While the students have regained their freedom, details surrounding the rescue operation remain unclear at this time.
The students were abducted last Thursday while travelling in a convoy of two buses through the Otukpo Local Government Area in Benue State, on their way to a program in Enugu State. Their capture triggered widespread condemnation across Nigeria, highlighting the growing concern over the escalating rate of kidnappings in the country.
Shortly after the abduction, the kidnappers made contact with the victims’ families, demanding a ransom of ₦50 million for their release. However, it remains unclear whether any ransom was paid before the students were freed.
