Nigeria: Niger State Police Destroy IEDs, Recover Stolen Goods

The Niger State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Shawulu Danmamman, announced the successful destruction of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) recovered during counter-insurgency operations from 2021 to 2023. The destruction, led by SP Mohammed Mamun, took place on August 22, 2024, near Zuma Rock in Suleja.

The IEDs destroyed included pipe-borne explosives, military-grade missiles, and hand grenades, which had been recovered from Shiroro and Minna.

In a separate operation, police recovered an abandoned AK-49 rifle on August 14, 2024, in the Kaffin-Koro area. The rifle, believed to have been left by bandits, is currently undergoing forensic analysis.

The police also made notable arrests in recent weeks:

  • On August 23, 2024, two suspected robbers were apprehended in Zuba, Abuja. They were found in possession of a stolen Mercedes C230 and various electronic items. The suspects have confessed to the crime and are under investigation.
  • On August 16, 2024, a suspect was arrested in Tafa for attempting to sell 52 rolls of vandalized aluminum cables. Additional arrests have been made in connection to this case, with ongoing investigations to identify further suspects.
  • On August 19, 2024, a man was detained in Maitumbi with a stolen motorcycle and tools used for theft. He has admitted to previous thefts and is currently under investigation.

The Niger State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the safety and security of residents in the state.
