Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has officially named the new Edo State Arena after renowned Afrobeats singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema.
The announcement was made by the Governor on his X handle on Thursday, following the groundbreaking ceremony for the 6,000-capacity arena held in Benin City.
Located at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekehuan Road in Benin City, the arena will be known as “Rema Dome.” The project aims to provide a venue capable of hosting major events such as concerts, national conferences, symposiums, and conventions.
Governor Obaseki highlighted the necessity of having a large-scale venue in the state, especially to accommodate events involving guests from outside the region. “We identified the need for a proper venue to host cultural and entertainment events, which led to the acquisition of this property,” he stated.
Rema, who hails from Edo State, expressed his pride in the state’s progress and pledged his support for the project. “I am proud of the growth, togetherness, and passion in Edo State. I am committed to ensuring that this project is completed successfully,” he said.
The ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including the Minister of Arts, Culture and Tourism, Uyi Oduwa Malaka, commissioners, special advisers, PDP members, and others. Governor Obaseki also expressed his anticipation of the arena hosting both local and international music sensations, including Rema.
