Former Big Brother Naija star and two-time Nigerian high jump champion, Mike Edwards, has successfully transitioned into professional boxing, securing a win in his debut fight against Jake Cornish.

The bout, held at the Dublin Arena, saw Edwards competing in the Misfits Boxing Cruiserweight division, an organization led by English social media personality and Nigerian-born professional boxer KSI. Edwards emerged victorious by unanimous decision after going all rounds.

Edwards announced his entry into professional boxing on August 31, 2024, marking a significant shift from his previous career in track and field. In a statement, he expressed his excitement about this new chapter, saying, “Excited to announce my entry into the world of professional boxing! Thrilled to join the Cruiserweight division roster on @MisfitsBoxing. Get ready for an electrifying debut as I step into the ring to showcase my skills and determination.”

Before his transition to boxing, Edwards had an accomplished athletic career.
Initially competing as a British track and field athlete, he switched allegiance to Nigeria in August 2018. He holds a lifetime best of 2.25m in the high jump and won the Nigerian national championships in 2021 and 2022.

Edwards also reached the final of the African Athletics Championships twice and narrowly missed out on a gold medal in 2022, in addition to being a finalist at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022.
