Nigeria: Labour Party to Boycott Anambra LG Election

The Labour Party (LP) in Anambra has stated that it will not participate in the forthcoming State local government council elections scheduled for September 28, 2024.

According to a statement signed and made available to Journalists in Awka on Tuesday, by the party state publicity secretary, Engr. Theo Egbe, the local government election is ill-conceived and based on unjust and poorly constructed electoral laws, making it unworthy of the party’s participation.

The Anambra State Labour Party reaffirms its commitment to legally challenge the election, which it views as an illegal construct.

The statement also disavows any association with the sale of nomination forms by unidentified individuals and urges members and aspirants to avoid engaging with these forms.

The statement which reads:

“The Labour Party State Executive Anambra State Chapter, led by Hon. Ugochukwu Emeh, directs the entire Labour Party family in Anambra State as follows:

The Labour Party Anambra State Chapter remains a united and undivided family.


The Labour Party is prepared to participate only in a local government council election conducted according to the rule of law and due process.

The proposed Anambra State LGA council election is seen as ill-conceived and based on unjust and illegally amended electoral laws, rendering it unworthy of participation.


The sale of nomination forms by state-sponsored, unidentified individuals is not endorsed by the Labour Party Anambra State Chapter and should be avoided by our members and aspirants

The Labour Party Anambra State Chapter reaffirms its commitment to legally contest the Anambra State LGA council election

Members are advised to remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding as the party works to address this issue. A properly conducted LGA local council election will be pursued, and only those who align with the Labour Party’s position will be considered for future opportunities.”
