The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has disavowed involvement in the planned protest against fuel price hikes scheduled for September 15, calling the rumours surrounding it false and misleading.
In a statement released on Wednesday and signed by Senate President Afeez Akinteye, NANS clarified that it had neither announced nor endorsed any protest action. The statement described the circulating reports as baseless and not reflective of NANS’s official stance.
Akinteye urged security agencies to investigate the source of these false claims, asserting that the dissemination of such misinformation threatens public order and national stability.
“The leadership of NANS is aware of the false reports suggesting our involvement in a large-scale protest. We categorically state that these claims are unfounded and do not represent our organization’s position or intentions,” Akinteye said.
He emphasized that NANS remains committed to peaceful advocacy and constructive dialogue with stakeholders, distancing itself from any actions that could incite unrest. Akinteye urged the public and media to disregard these misleading reports and called for a thorough investigation into the perpetrators of the misinformation.
“NANS strongly condemns the use of our name for malicious purposes aimed at creating discord. We call on security agencies to identify and hold accountable those responsible for these unfounded claims,” Akinteye added.
The association reaffirmed its dedication to advocating for students’ rights through lawful and peaceful means, and urged everyone to remain vigilant against attempts to exploit NANS for disruptive agendas.
