Renowned climate scientist and environmental consultant, Prof. Jimmy Adegoke, has emphasized the crucial role Nigerians in the diaspora can play in addressing the country’s developmental challenges.
Prof. Adegoke made this statement during a media chat following a send-off dinner held in his honour by a group of diaspora scholars and associates in Lagos.
Having recently retired from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) after nearly 25 years of academic leadership, Prof. Adegoke highlighted how the global exposure and networks of Nigerians living abroad can benefit the nation’s growth.
He emphasized that diasporans can foster international partnerships, introduce innovative perspectives to policymaking, and attract much-needed investments.
“Many Nigerians returning home are eager to contribute to national development, showcasing their patriotism and commitment,” Adegoke stated. He believes that by leveraging the expertise and talent of the diaspora, Nigeria can boost its economic growth, improve governance, and elevate its global standing.
Prof. Adegoke, who currently serves as an advisor and senior consultant on climate change and green growth for the African Development Bank (AfDB), has a career spanning science, climate policy, and environmental governance.
His research has received support from major agencies such as NASA, the US National Science Foundation (NSF), and the AfDB.
In his illustrious career, Adegoke has held several prestigious positions, including Chair of the Department of Geosciences at UMKC and Director of the University’s Centre for Applied Environmental Research (CAER).
He also served as interim Executive Director of the West African Science Service Center for Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) in 2017 and held executive leadership roles at South Africa’s Council for Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR).
Prof. Adegoke’s contributions extend to Nigeria, where he chaired the Ministerial Advisory Committee on Agricultural Resilience, which developed a national climate adaptation program in 2014.
He remains actively involved in various international science advisory boards and holds permanent residence in Kansas City, where he previously served on the city’s Environmental Management Commission.
With numerous accolades, including recognition as the “Inspiring Leader of the Year” by the University of Ibadan Alumni Global Network and an inductee into the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Hall of Fame, Prof. Adegoke’s influence and impact continue to resonate both within Nigeria and internationally.
