The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has refused to sign the peace accord for the upcoming Edo State Governorship election, slated for September 21.
Former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar disclosed this on Thursday during the peace accord signing ceremony in Benin.
Abubakar stated that the PDP declined to sign the agreement, citing unmet conditions. “I met the governor yesterday, and he informed me that the PDP would not sign this peace accord,” Abubakar explained.
He further noted that the party had raised certain concerns and that their chairman was expected to address the issue. However, after waiting for an extended period, the party did not provide further clarification at the venue.
According to Abubakar, the PDP promised to sign the peace accord after their conditions are addressed, with plans to formalize the agreement in Abuja. The PDP’s state chairman was absent to provide further details on the party’s decision.
Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State had hinted on Wednesday that his party might not sign the peace accord, sharing his concerns during a meeting with members of the National Peace Committee.
While the PDP and its candidate, Mr. Asue Ighodalo, opted out of the signing, other major parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Mr. Monday Okpebholo, as well as the Labour Party’s Olumide Akpata, participated in the process.
