Aviation workers in Nigeria have suspended their planned protest, initially scheduled for September 18, 2024, in response to the Federal Government’s policy of deducting 50% of the internally generated revenue from key aviation agencies.
Last week, aviation unions criticized the government’s refusal to reverse this deduction policy, which impacts major agencies, including the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Nigeria College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB).
In a statement dated September 17, 2024, Olayinka Abioye, General Secretary of the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE), announced the suspension of the protest, citing ongoing discussions with higher authorities regarding the revenue deductions.
“Following the information available to us about ongoing discussions by higher authorities over the continued 50% deductions, we inform our esteemed members that the planned protest for 19/09/2024 is suspended pending the outcome of these talks, which we will communicate appropriately,” Abioye stated.
