The Nigeria women’s rugby team, the Green Falcons, are set to face Kenya for the second time in four days, aiming for another victory in their two-match series at Impala Stadium, Nairobi, on Sunday.

A win would secure their place in the 2025 World Series. On Thursday, the Nigerians made history by defeating Kenya 22-14 in the first leg of the inaugural MEA Women’s Rugby League World Cup Qualifiers at the same venue.

Nigeria’s newly appointed coach, Bolu Fagborun, expressed confidence ahead of the decisive clash, noting his team’s strong mindset and preparation. “I’ve been really impressed by the attitude and determination shown by this group of women. We have some exciting players who will be encouraged to express themselves. Well done to all the management, chair, and sponsors from NRLA who’ve worked so hard to ensure that this group of women gets this opportunity to play international sports,” Fagborun stated just hours before Nigeria’s historic win, which now positions them as favorites to qualify for the 2025 World Series as the MEA representatives.
Nigeria Rugby League vice chairman, Ade Adebisi, shared Fagborun’s optimism, saying, “Our team has been working tirelessly in preparation for this pivotal moment in Nigerian Rugby League history. We are confident that the hard work, dedication, and passion of our players will shine through in this crucial encounter. We are all eagerly looking forward to the qualifiers and are hopeful for a successful outcome that will bring us one step closer to representing Nigeria on the world stage.”
However, Kenya still has a chance to claim the World Series spot. If they win the second match, the overall winner will be decided based on aggregate score.
Kenya’s head coach, Dennish Ndinya, remains confident in his team’s ability to turn the tide, stating, “Every match is a step toward our World Cup dreams. We plan to play with heart, focus, and unity. The world is watching, and Kenya is ready to make our mark.”
Co-captain, Moreen Atieno echoed Ndinya’s sentiments, saying, “To my teammates, let us channel our focus and determination onto the field and remember that every action counts. To our incredible fans, your support and cheers fuel our passion. Stand with us as we aim for the World Cup.”
