Interim Super Eagles coach, Augustine Eguavoen has responded to rumors regarding Chelsea defender, Tosin Adarabioyo and his possible inclusion in Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Despite increasing reports that Adarabioyo may receive his first call-up to the Super Eagles, Eguavoen clarified that he has not had direct communication with the 27-year-old defender.

“I didn’t speak with Tosin, but he’s a good player,” Eguavoen told Premium Times. “He’s one of the players we’re monitoring. Every Nigerian playing worldwide has the right to play for Nigeria, including Tosin.”
Born in London to Nigerian parents, Adarabioyo is eligible to represent both England and Nigeria. However, following his omission from England’s squad for the 2024 European Championship, it is speculated that the Chelsea center-back may be considering committing his international future to Nigeria.
While Eguavoen confirmed that Adarabioyo is under observation, the defender’s chances of being included in the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming AFCON doubleheader against Libya appear slim. Instead, Eguavoen is expected to rely on the defensive trio of William Troost-Ekong, Semi Ajayi, and Calvin Bassey, who contributed to Nigeria’s 3-0 victory over Benin Republic and a goalless draw against Rwanda earlier in September.

“Same approach; the players were willing to do it then, and they still want to do it. It’s completely up to them. We can only advise them,” Eguavoen stated, emphasizing his desire for consistency in defensive selections.

Currently, the Super Eagles lead Group D with four points from two matches and are aiming for back-to-back wins against Libya next month to secure their qualification for AFCON 2024.
