Tragedy struck in Anambra State as gunmen killed crew members of the broadcast network SuperSport, along with a police officer, in an ambush on the Ihiala-Orlu Road.

The victims were en route to cover the Super Eagles’ 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Libya. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed the attack, stating that it occurred on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. The NFF expressed condolences to the families of those slain in the incident, which also claimed the lives of a cameraman, a police officer, and the bus driver.
According to the NFF, the gunmen ambushed the bus carrying SuperSport staff and security personnel, opening fire and causing immediate fatalities.
NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau expressed sorrow over the incident, noting that although Nigeria secured a 1-0 victory against Libya in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, the tragedy overshadowed the team’s success.
“Yes, we won the match and gained three points, but the loss of three lives has made it impossible to celebrate properly. It hurts deeply,” Gusau said.
Gusau also reflected on Nigeria’s longstanding partnership with SuperSport, sharing in the network’s grief. He prayed for comfort for the bereaved families and for the souls of the departed to rest in peace.

The NFF revealed that 14 people were in the vehicle at the time of the attack. Eight were rescued, two escaped, three were killed, and one person remains unaccounted for.
Gusau called for the safe return of the missing individual and extended his prayers to the families affected by the tragic event. Before the Kick-off between Nigeria and Libya, A minute silence was held for the lives lost
