In a recent battle in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum, government forces successfully destroyed a rare Russian-made Federal-M armored vehicle used by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) rebels.
Local residents shared photos of the heavily damaged vehicle online.
The Federal-M, known for its mine-resistant design, was reportedly hit by an anti-tank grenade on the left side, severely damaging its armour.
The vehicle, found in the Al-Lamap district, also bore multiple bullet holes, suggesting that the crew engaged in a firefight before abandoning it. No bodies were discovered near the vehicle, indicating the crew may have fled.
This is the first known sighting of the Federal-M in Sudan’s ongoing civil war, where pro-government forces are battling the RSF, a rebel group backed by Russia and mercenaries from the Wagner Group.
Previously, the only export mention of these armored vehicles was in 2013, when a batch was reportedly produced for a North African country, now confirmed to be Sudan.
The Federal-M, developed by Moscow’s Institute of Specialized Vehicles, is built on the Ural-4320 truck frame and features a U-shaped armored capsule to protect personnel in high-risk areas.
