The Kano Independent Electoral Commission has awarded certificates of return to the newly elected 44 Local Government Chairmen across the state.
The certificates were issued on Sunday by the commission’s Chairman, Prof. Sani Malumfashi, as reported by Daily Trust. He emphasized that the commission holds the authority to issue these certificates and urged the newly elected chairmen and councillors to fulfill their responsibilities diligently.

“According to electoral regulations, the commission is tasked with issuing certificates of return to the elected chairmen and councillors as the legitimate leaders of their local government areas,” Malumfashi stated. “They are now charged with addressing the official needs of their respective LGAs.”
The report also mentioned that Governor Abba Yusuf is expected to swear in the chairmen at Government House in Kano soon. The state electoral commission announced that the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) won all 44 chairmanship and 484 councillorship positions in Saturday’s local government elections.
Six political parties participated in the elections: AA, AAC, Accord, ADC, APM, and NNPP. “The NNPP emerged victorious in all 44 local government chairmanships and 484 councillorship seats contested,” Malumfashi confirmed.
On Friday, October 25, 2024, Governor Yusuf reaffirmed the commitment to conduct the local government elections as planned on October 26, stating, “The state will not allow anyone to disrupt the peace enjoyed by the citizens. We have met all legal requirements and completed preparations for the elections.”
This announcement comes despite a Federal High Court ruling that removed the commission’s chairman for being a card-carrying member of a political party.
