Kithure Kindiki was sworn in as Kenya’s deputy president on Friday after a court lifted a stay on his inauguration, following legal battles by his predecessor Rigathi Gachagua, who was impeached last month.

The Senate removed Gachagua on charges including constitutional violations and inciting ethnic hatred, allegations he denies as politically motivated.

The inauguration concludes a period of political instability marked by tax hike protests and a shift in President William Ruto’s administration, which recently welcomed opposition leaders in a unity effort.
