Nigeria’s under-18 men’s handball team clinched the IHF Trophy Africa Men Continental Phase championship on Wednesday with a commanding 38-26 victory over Guinea in the final, held in Addis Ababa.

The win solidifies Nigeria’s dominance, as they successfully defend the title they first captured in Congo Brazzaville two years ago.

In a match attended by high-ranking Ethiopian officials and Nigerian embassy representatives, including Embassy Minister, Mr. Boco Effiom Mbo, Coach Emeka Nnamani’s team showed intent from the start.

Despite a few turnovers, they led the first half 21-14. The second half saw Nigeria fully take control, displaying flair and strategy, with Christian Foloki—who overcame a knock from the semi-final against Cameroon—and standout Azeez Sulaimon leading the scoring charge. Their combined efforts saw the team soar to a 38-26 victory.

Azeez Sulaimon Olaitan was named the Most Valuable Player of the match for his remarkable performance.

Coach Nnamani praised his players’ dedication and thanked the Handball Federation of Nigeria, led by Mr. Samuel Ocheho, for their unwavering support throughout the tournament—from the Zone 3 Phase in Ghana to the continental stage. “We prepared extensively for this moment,” Nnamani said. “The boys gave it everything, especially knowing the Guineans well and tactically preparing for them. The real MVP is the Handball Federation of Nigeria, which ensured we reached this stage despite challenges, including a flight delay, and provided full backing for our success.”
