Residents of Bloemfontein in the Free State have looted foreign-owned spaza shops following an incident where 47 students from Ihobe Primary School were rushed to Pelonomi Hospital.

The students reportedly fell ill after consuming expired biscuits and chocolates, allegedly purchased from some of these shops.

The incident has intensified local concerns about food safety. Community members are calling on the government to deploy health inspectors to monitor both wholesale and spaza shops in the area.

They urge authorities to implement stricter safety measures in these establishments and emphasize the need for immediate action to prevent similar incidents.
