The final round of Group E matches in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifiers saw Algeria dominate Liberia with a resounding 5-1 victory, securing their unbeaten status, while Togo earned a morale-boosting 3-0 win over Equatorial Guinea in Lomé on Sunday.
Algeria’s Masterclass
At the Hocine Aït Ahmed Stadium, Algeria, already confirmed group leaders, showcased their superiority. Despite an early setback from Sampson Dweh’s sixth-minute strike for Liberia, the Fennecs quickly regained control. Aïssa Mandi equalized in the 20th minute, followed by a header from Riyad Mahrez in the 29th minute.

The second half saw a flurry of goals, with Baghdad Bounedjah, Amine Gouiri, and Mohammed Amoura adding their names to the scoresheet. Gouiri’s elegant finish into the bottom corner was a standout moment. Algeria finished the group with 16 points, scoring 16 goals while conceding only two, cementing their status as favorites for Morocco 2025.
Togo’s Consolation Win
In Lomé, Togo ended their campaign on a high with a 3-0 win over Equatorial Guinea. Despite failing to qualify, the Sparrowhawks snapped a three-match losing streak. Yaw Annor opened the scoring early, and Kevin Denkey added a sensational long-range strike before Annor sealed the win with his second goal in the 87th minute.

For Equatorial Guinea, already qualified for AFCON 2025, the loss marked the end of a 10-game unbeaten streak in qualifiers, highlighting areas for improvement.
