Kenya’s Energy Minister, Opiyo Wandayi, has denied any corruption or bribery in the award of a $736 million power line contract to Adani Energy Solutions, a subsidiary of India’s Adani Group. The contract, signed in October as a public-private partnership with the Kenya Electrical Transmission Company, was suspended by a court the same month.
Wandayi assured the Senate’s finance committee that the deal followed proper procedures and was free from any wrongdoing. He stated that Kenya conducted a thorough due diligence process and had no knowledge of any adverse matters related to Adani Energy Solutions. The minister emphasized that the project, aimed at improving Kenya’s electricity supply, was crucial, as the country lacked the funds for new transmission infrastructure.
This defense comes amid separate legal challenges in the U.S. against Adani Group CEO, Gautam Adani, who has been accused of bribing Indian officials.
