MTN South Africa, the country’s second-largest mobile operator, has launched the MTN Icon 5G, a budget-friendly 5G-enabled smartphone priced at 2,499 rand ($138). The move is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance mobile internet accessibility and transition customers from older 2G and 3G technologies to faster and more modern 4G and 5G networks.
Despite progress in mobile internet adoption, a significant digital divide persists in South Africa, primarily due to affordability, according to the GSMA industry body. To address this, the MTN Icon 5G offers an affordable entry point for users to enjoy the benefits of 5G, including faster data speeds, lower latency, and an enhanced user experience.
Customers can also purchase the device for 219 rand per month on a 36-month contract. The smartphone is manufactured by Chinese tech company ZTE Corp, further demonstrating MTN’s commitment to making advanced technology accessible to a wider audience.
“This is another significant step in our mission to ensure that all South Africans have access to fast, reliable, and affordable mobile communication, regardless of their economic background,” said Thando Gabela, General Manager for Devices at MTN South Africa.
By introducing the MTN Icon 5G, the company aims to accelerate the migration of customers to advanced network technologies as South Africa begins phasing out older 2G and 3G networks.
