Tanzanian opposition youth leader Abdul Nondo has been found injured and abandoned at Coco Beach in Dar es Salaam, less than a day after he was reportedly kidnapped.
Nondo, a key member of the ACT Wazalendo party, was blindfolded, severely beaten, and threatened with death by his abductors, according to the party’s deputy chairperson, Isihaka Mchinjita. After being dumped at the beach late Sunday night, Nondo sought help from a motorcycle taxi rider, who transported him to the party’s offices. Party leaders rushed him to the hospital for urgent medical care.
Police have confirmed the incident and launched an investigation. “We are working to identify the suspects and determine their motive,” said police spokesperson David Misime on Monday morning.
Mchinjita, who visited Nondo in the hospital, revealed chilling details of the ordeal, stating, “His abductors warned him that if captured again, they would not spare his life.”
Nondo was abducted early Sunday from a bus station in Dar es Salaam, shortly after returning from campaign activities in the western region. Two individuals in a white four-wheel-drive vehicle reportedly carried out the abduction.
This incident has drawn parallels to the kidnapping and murder of Chadema opposition leader Ali Mohamed Kibao in September. Kibao was beaten and doused with acid in a horrifying attack that drew widespread condemnation, including from President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who called for a thorough investigation.
The motive behind Nondo’s abduction remains unclear, but the attack has heightened concerns about the safety of opposition figures in Tanzania.
