A Magistrate Court in Ado Ekiti has ordered the remand of human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, over allegations of defamation against Aare Afe Babalola, the founder of Afe Babalola University.
Farotimi was arraigned on a 16-count charge, stemming from claims in his book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System. The publication allegedly accused Afe Babalola of corrupting the judiciary and influencing Supreme Court judgments, purportedly exposing him to public hatred, contempt, and ridicule, while damaging his esteemed reputation.
The lawyer pleaded not guilty to all charges. However, Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun denied him bail and ordered his remand in prison custody. The case was adjourned until December 10 for further hearing.
