United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has called for an urgent end to the siege of El Fasher in Sudan’s North Darfur state, where relentless violence has resulted in hundreds of civilian deaths, injuries, and large-scale destruction of homes and infrastructure.
In a statement released alongside a report detailing the devastating effects of the seven-month-long blockade by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Türk expressed deep concern over the ongoing crisis.
“The continuing siege of El Fasher and the relentless fighting are devastating lives every day on a massive scale,” Türk said, emphasizing the need for immediate action.
“This alarming situation cannot continue. The Rapid Support Forces must end the horrible siege. And I urge all parties to the conflict to stop attacks on civilians and civilian objects … and to comply with their obligations and commitments under international law.”
The report reveals that since the siege began in May, at least 782 civilians have been killed, with over 1,143 injured, underscoring the severe humanitarian toll of the conflict.
