The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully intercepted two boats carrying 1,960 kilograms of Ghanaian Loud, a potent strain of cannabis, at Eleko Beach in Lekki, Lagos, during a midnight operation on Christmas Eve.
In a statement released by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, six foreign nationals were apprehended in connection with the illegal cargo.
The suspects include two Ghanaians, Godsway John (38) and Freedom Kelvin (33), and four Beninese nationals: Chegoun Hounsou (23), Gadabor Nyameto (47), Adantg Sasa (34), and Ayao Kayivi (21). The cannabis was reportedly smuggled into Nigeria via waterways from Ghana.
In a separate operation, NDLEA operatives at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, arrested a 48-year-old businessman, Orizu Arthur, on December 22 while attempting to board an Air France flight to Paris. Orizu had refused a body scan during passenger clearance, citing medical reasons, raising suspicions.
He was subsequently placed under excretion observation and, over seven days, expelled 74 wraps of Class A drugs. During interrogation, Orizu confessed to being promised €3,000 upon successfully delivering the drugs in Paris. He also revealed that he owns a shop at Balogun Market in Lagos Island, where he sells school and travel bags.
Additionally, Babafemi disclosed that two more suspects were arrested in separate operations for possession of compressed cannabis sativa.
These arrests highlight NDLEA’s continued efforts to curb drug trafficking across Nigeria’s borders and waterways.
