Ivorian forward, Sebastien Haller’s challenging loan spell at Leganés appears to be nearing its conclusion. The 30-year-old striker, on loan from Borussia Dortmund, has endured a disappointing stint in Spain, failing to score in nine appearances.

Reports indicate that Haller is set to return to Germany this winter, although Borussia Dortmund has no plans to reintegrate him into their squad. According to Bild, Haller is exploring a potential return to FC Utrecht, the Dutch club where he launched his professional career between 2015 and 2017. A move back to Utrecht is seen as a chance for the striker to revive his career after a series of setbacks. Another potential destination is Croatia’s Dinamo Zagreb, with local media reporting the club’s keen interest in signing him during the January transfer window.

Haller’s time at Leganés has been underwhelming. Across 525 minutes of play in nine matches, he failed to score, leading to a sharp decline in his market value—from €10 million to just €3 million. Reflecting on his difficult spell earlier this month, Haller admitted, “This season has been filled with obstacles and hasn’t met my expectations.”

Borussia Dortmund had hoped the loan move would help Haller rediscover his form after a tough 2023/24 season. Sporting director, Sebastian Kehl expressed optimism when the deal was finalized, stating, “It’s important for Sebastien to play regularly and regain the joy of scoring goals. We fully support his opportunity in La Liga.” However, Haller’s struggles at newly promoted Leganés have dashed those hopes.

A return to FC Utrecht would offer Haller a familiar environment to reignite his career. During his time in the Eredivisie, he scored an impressive 51 goals in 98 appearances, earning a reputation as a prolific striker. Utrecht is reportedly open to reuniting with the player who once thrived in their system.

Dinamo Zagreb has also emerged as a potential destination. Under the guidance of new coach Fabio Cannavaro, the Croatian giants are seeking reinforcements to bolster their squad for the title race. Currently sitting third in the league, Dinamo views Haller as a valuable addition to their offensive lineup.

As the January transfer window approaches, Sebastien Haller faces a pivotal decision in his career. Whether he returns to Utrecht or opts for a fresh start in Croatia, his next move will be crucial in reviving his form and rebuilding his confidence.
