The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has issued a reminder to athletes worldwide to review and understand the updated World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List, which outlines substances and methods banned in competition and those prohibited at all times. The 2025 Prohibited List takes effect on January 1, 2025.
AIU, established by World Athletics in 2017 to combat doping and other forms of ethical misconduct in athletics, emphasized the importance of athletes, including Nigerian competitors, becoming well-acquainted with the list.

According to SportsNow.com, AIU urged athletes to consult their doctors to clarify which substances or methods are prohibited.
“You are solely responsible for any substances found in your body,” the AIU stated on its website. “Ensure you familiarize yourself with the new list well before the changes take effect.”

The WADA Prohibited List is categorized into substances and methods, with some banned at all times and others restricted only during competition.
- Hormones
- Anabolic agents
- Erythropoietin (EPO)
- Beta-2 agonists
- Masking agents
- Diuretics
- Blood transfusions or manipulations
- Certain intravenous injections
Substances and Methods Prohibited In-Competition Only:
- Stimulants
- Marijuana
- Narcotics
- Glucocorticosteroids
For in-competition bans, athletes must avoid prohibited substances and methods from 11:59 p.m. on the day before their scheduled competition until the conclusion of the event, including the doping control process.

For example, marijuana use is prohibited only during the in-competition window. Athletes are advised to abstain from smoking marijuana beginning at 11:59 p.m. the day before the competition until the event concludes and all doping control measures are completed.
The AIU stressed that adherence to these regulations is critical to ensuring fair competition and maintaining the integrity of the sport.
