The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed that 18 people sustained severe injuries following a gas explosion on Sunday evening in the Oroazi community, Port Harcourt.
The explosion occurred at a gas refilling shop and caused significant damage to nearby buildings. According to SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the command’s spokesperson, the incident was triggered by a technician repairing a refrigerator.
“The technician was using a gas cylinder for welding while simultaneously attempting to refill gas into the refrigerator, which resulted in the explosion,” Iringe-Koko explained.
She further stated that while no lives were lost, the injured individuals, including the technician, suffered varying degrees of burn injuries and were swiftly taken to the hospital for treatment.
