The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has detained an officer featured in a viral video appearing to mishandle naira notes alongside Subomi “Sirheem” Okoya and his brother Wahab, sons of billionaire industrialist Razaq Okoya.
The video shows the officer holding wads of naira as Sirheem, a budding musician, and Wahab danced to promote Sirheem’s new song. The clip sparked public outrage, raising concerns about the misuse of Nigeria’s currency and the deployment of police officers for personal ventures.
This incident comes amid heightened enforcement of currency regulations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which intensified its crackdown on naira abuse in 2024 under Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act.
Earlier this year, social media celebrity Bobrisky was arrested in Lagos for defacing naira notes and arraigned on a six-count charge. Similarly, the EFCC filed a three-count charge against socialite Cubana Chief Priest for alleged currency abuse.
The NPF has promised a thorough investigation into the officer’s actions, emphasizing its commitment to upholding professionalism and deterring further misuse of public resources.
