Nigeria: Lagos Assembly Elects New Principal Officers Following Obasa’s Removal

In a significant development following the removal of Hon Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker, Lagos State Assembly members on Friday January 17, 2025, appointed new principal officers during a plenary session.

Hon Temitope Adedeji (Ifako Ijaiye 1) was elected as the Majority Leader, while Hon Sanni Babatunde (Kosofe 1) was appointed as the Chief Whip. Additionally, Hon Richard Kasunmu (Ikeja 2) was named Deputy Majority Leader, and Hon David Setonji (Badagry 2) was chosen as Deputy Chief Whip.

The appointments were made under the leadership of Rt Hon Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, who presided over the session. The plenary was attended by 37 members, while three members, including the former Speaker Obasa, ex-Majority Leader Nojeem Adams, and Hon Akinsanya Nureni, were absent.
