Kenya has sent an additional 217 police officers to Haiti as part of a multinational force aimed at reducing gang violence in the Caribbean nation.

This deployment brings the total number of Kenyan troops in Haiti to over 600, with President William Ruto pledging to deploy 1,000 troops in total as part of the United Nations-backed force.

According to Kenya’s Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen, the Kenya-led mission has made significant progress in reducing gang violence, earning international praise.

Murkomen emphasized Kenya’s unwavering commitment to this historic mission.

The situation in Haiti is dire, with gang violence leaving over 700,000 people homeless and resulting in more than 5,600 deaths last year.

The United Nations has reported a 20% increase in killings compared to 2023, with over 2,200 people injured and nearly 1,500 kidnapped.
