South African Airways (SAA) is set to restart daily flights to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on Monday, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s recovery.
This move comes after a five-year break and follows SAA’s first profit in over a decade, achieved last year.
The reinstatement of flights to Tanzania’s economic hub is expected to enhance trade and business travel between the two nations.
Interim CEO John Mamola highlighted the strategic importance of this decision, citing considerable South African investments in Tanzania.
The development also follows Air Tanzania’s resumption of services to South Africa in November, after a similar five-year absence.
The airline’s return is seen as a positive step in strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries.
SAA’s resurgence comes after a comprehensive restructuring process, prompted by severe financial troubles that required government intervention in 2021.
The airline’s return to profitability has paved the way for expansion, with the Dar es Salaam route being a key part of its regional growth strategy.
