South Sudan’s Jonglei State Governor, Mahjoub Biel Turuk, has ordered the house arrest of Minister of Land and Housing, Isaac Mamer Ruk, accusing him of instigating recent anti-Sudan protests in the state capital, Bor.
The protests, sparked by the killing of South Sudanese citizens in Sudan, led to the looting of Sudanese-owned businesses.
Ruk denies the allegations, calling them baseless and unfounded. He claims Governor Turuk was absent from the state during the protests, and questions the governor’s motives. Ruk also alleges that Turuk is dividing the state cabinet along political lines, targeting SPLM ministers ¹.
The house arrest order, dated January 22, directs Ruk to remain at home until further notice. An investigation committee will be formed to probe Ruk’s involvement in various security issues, including the looting of the Marol Market. This development highlights the ongoing tensions and power struggles within South Sudan’s government.
