Supporters of Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, gathered in large numbers at the Speaker’s Lodge in GRA Ikeja, Lagos, on Saturday morning.

The supporters, donning pro-Obasa vests and caps, were reportedly planning a “heroic welcome” for the lawmaker, who was recently removed from office by a majority of lawmakers.
Obasa’s impeachment led to his replacement by Mojisola Meranda, the former deputy speaker, who has since presided over two sittings. Notably, Obasa was not present in the country when he was impeached.

The choice of the Speaker’s Lodge as the location for Obasa’s welcome has raised eyebrows, given that he is no longer officially entitled to the residence.
A resident expressed surprise that the lodge was opened for the supporters, saying, “I didn’t expect that the lodge would be opened for them”.
To prevent any potential breakdown of law and order, armed security personnel, including police officers, are currently deployed in the area.
The embattled and impeached speaker, who addressed his supporters, said his Impeachment was unconstitutional and that would accept his removal if it is carried out in accordance with the appropriate laws and guidelines.
